Xii. GARDEN CITY
Sam O. Nwaojigba
Ques 1)
What picture does the
poet draw of the Garden City in the poem ?
Answer :
The poet draws a pathetic (painful) picture of
Port Harcourt, Nigeria which is called the Garden City . But infact it is
without flowers and fragnance in which the rubbish is thrown and finally burned
.
The
people living in this are numb (without feelings). They have become insensitive
to pain . The city is over-crowded and noisy . It is a graveyard of lifeless
people .
The
poet here sees wide economic difference . A very small section of people are
fortunate . But the majority of Children are badly dressed . They dig in to the
filth to earn their food . They are picture of extreme poverty .
The poet feels suffered in this city . His
lungs are getting poisoned . He makes a confession that he also has become a
part of this decandent society .
In
Short, the Garden City is devoid of all its beauty now . Its fragnance has lost
. The mass of people are wailing . The irony is that they themselves are
supporting a society which tortures them .
