X. The
VERGER
W.
Somerset
Ques 1)
Which qualities of
Edward Foreman’s character impress you the most and why ?
Answer :
Albert Edward Foreman was the verger of St.
Peter’s church. He had held this position for 16 years. He had all the virtues
of a gentleman except formal education.
He was duty bound and put on his gown in a
dignified manner. He performed his duty very efficiently. He was kind. People
loved and respected him for his kind nature. He had ill-will against none.
Though he had no formal education, yet he was wise. He was bold to meet the
problems of life in a holy way. Thus he was better educated.
Edward was a courageous fellow when he was
removed from his service by the new vicar as he could not read and write. He
did not lose his heart. He started his tobacco business with one shop, by and
by he worked hard and took other shops in different localities. He had a little
more than thirty thousand pounds in the bank.
Thus, we can say that Edward was a successful
businessman. He was a man of iron-determination and rare will-power. Being an
uneducated person, he was a successful man. Edward’s example proves that where
there is a will, there is a way .

Explanation :
When the bank manager suggested to Foreman that
he should invest his money in some securities, Foreman showed ignorance. The
manager assured him that the bank would do in his favour and he just had to
give written permission for investment. Foreman told him that he could neither
read or write. Maximum he could put his signature only. On hearing this, the
manager was so surprised that he jumped up from his chair knowing that the
successful businessman before him was an illiterate. He told that it was an
