I
. MASS PRODUCTION
G.C.
Thornley
In this essay, the author, G.C. Thornley has discussed various
aspects of Mass Production. First of all, he has defined the term Mass
Production, in a very simple and easy language. According to him, mass
production means manufacturing goods in very large numbers by using huge
machines. This new method of manufacturing articles in great numbers and great
amount differs from the older methods of manufacture. In the olden times,
articles were made by craftsmen. These skilled workmen made the whole of an
article by their hands. The process was very slow. It involved a lot of labour
and time. Such articles could not be mass produced. They were often wonderful
pieces of art and beauty. Hence they were costly and beyond the purchasing
power of the poor people. On the other hand mass-produced articles are cheaper,
though less beautiful than those made by hand. The skilled workman of olden
times was dedicated to his work. He used to put his heart and soul into his
job. His whole reputation depended upon the quality of the article which he
made. So he got a lot of job satisfaction from his work. A modern factory worker
has no such interest or stake in his work. His total contribution to the making
of a particular article is so small that he feels no personal interest in its
quality. His only interest is his wages. Hence he gets no pleasure or deprives
no-satisfaction out of his work.
Short questions
Ques 1)
What are the
disadvantges pointed out in the lesson Mass Production ?
OR
What does the writer mean when he says that Mass production
is not an unmixed blessing ?
Answer :
Mass production means making an article in a
very large number by using machines . It has proved a blessing to common people
as it has provided goods at cheap rates . But the writer says that mass
production is not an unmixed blessing while mass production produced articles
are cheaper , the workers do not get any
pleasures out of their work . Their work is just automatic . They lose interest
in their work because they repeat the same operation day by day . Their work is
so dull and boring that they work with one
eye on the clock .
Ques 2)
How the age of Mass
production was born ?
Answer :
It is difficult to name any person who may be
called the inventor of Mass production . Now-a-days the phrase , Mass
Production is often associated with the name of Henryford . It was he , who had
successfully applied, Mass Production Method to the Manufactures of motor cars
but he cannot be called the inventor of Mass production . We may say that Mass
Production has actually started when the first mill for the manufacture of
cloth was built . At that time , the steam engine was invented . It supplied
cheap power to the manufactures . The age of Mass production was born when one
huge machine began operation rapidly which were done by hand previously .
Charlie Chaplin in his
film ‘Modern Times’ drew attention to this danger ?
OR
What did Charlie illustrate in his film ‘Modern Times’ ?
Answer :
Reference to Context :
This extract has been taken from the lesson
‘Mass Production’ written by G.C Thornley. In the lesson the author has listed
production.
Explanation :
Here the writer is explaining one of the danger
of Mass production. Under mass production, a worker has a very small part of a
Job to do. Repeating it day after day he goes crazy or suffers from mental
disorder. This is well described by Charlie Chaplin in his film ‘Modern Times’.
He gets a Job in a modern factory. His Job is simply to tighten a nut on a
bolt. He has to stand by a machine with a spanner in his hand to tighten just one
nut. By doing it again and again his mind is affected. He loses his balance of
mind.
What was the impact of
Industrial Revolution in the lives of the people of Europe ?
Answer :
Industrial Revolution brought about great
change in the life of the people of Europe. It created a great demand for all
kinds of goods to be cheap enough so that even poor workers could purchase them
out of their wages. During Industrial Revolution the demand for goods was very
high both at home and abroad. There is no doubt that Mass Production has raised
the standard of people. The life of people has been deeply affected by the
Motor Cars. People now can easily travel to and too far. The standard of living
of people all over the world has round due to Industrial Revolution.
