IV. If You Are True To Your Gift

This poem is in praise of a god-gifted self. It deals with the nature and scope of a natural self in life. Self occupies a very vital position in life. A naturally gifted person is a rare creation of god. He is the model of iron determination and strong will power. He can easily overcome old age, time and place. A spiritualised self is evergreen. It is never lost in oblivion after death. A divinely blessed soul ensures immortality to the departed person. He is remembered after his death.










Question 1)
What is the message of the poem ‘If You are True to Your Gift ?
Answer :
The poem ‘If You are True to Your Gift’ deals with a poet’s sincerity to his art. A poet is a man gifted with talent who uses his creativity to write poerty . So he should use his true genius as an artist to create an imaginative world. Through the medium of this imaginative world he should be able to escape man’s enemies – Old age , time and space . When an ordinary man dies he is soon forgotten. But this is not the case with poet’s and artists. A poet’s liberating voice enables him to live in a timeless world. If the poet is indeed true towards his gift and is able to create a truly imaginative world, he is not afraid of death because he knows that he will live forever and
become immortal through his poems.

Explain with reference to the context :

Answer :
These lines have been taken from the poem titled ‘If You are True to Your Gift’ by Irakli Abashidze. In the poem, the poet says that a poet is a man gifted with talent. He uses his talent by writing poetry. So the only creed to which a poet must be true is art for art’s sake. A poet should take his work seriously and create an imaginative world. The poet in the above lines explain that old age and wrinkled face will come in everyone’s life but only a poet true to his art will be able to pass it with full grace.
